Discussion
I've had this laptop for about a year, purchased after my awesome old hp nw9440 was starting to show signs of it's age (would power down fairly randomly once or twice a month).
I was excited about the 8740w because it looked exactly like what I was hoping for: basically the nw9440 with better specs. I *really* wanted to love this machine but I've come to really despise it. It's heavier than my old nw9440, and though it has 4 times the memory (16G) and 8 times the processing power (quad core vs dual core), it doesn't really “feel” any more robust. I've had the kb replaced twice and still it has quirks where sometimes keys stop working. It does the randomly power-down thing from time to time. It's always hot, the fan is always running and spewing out air ~115F degrees or hotter and I don't really expect it to be easy on the battery but it's pretty ridiculous at about 30-45m.. I would at least get a couple hours out of my nw9440..
Specs:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 Q840
16G ram
500G 7200rpm drive
backlit kb
17” DreamColor 1920×1200 display
Running ubuntu 12.04
Everything pretty much works, except the fingerprint scanner but I still wouldn't recommend this laptop to anyone. Planning to try and see what I can possibly get for it on ebay and buy me a thinkpad instead.
-Soarly disappointed. :(
