I have a Fujitsu-Siemens AMILO Li3710. I bought this second hand for the purposes of using it to run Linux. It came with a 250GB HD that was showing its age. This was swapped out for a 750GB. There is a PAE flag on the processor that allows me to use more than 4GB of memory even though it is 32bit. This is ideal. The laptop came with Windows 8 installed. That amused me as it was the Dutch version. After playing around with that for a hour, I have to agree with the majority of people; Windows 8 is horrible. It was time to nuke and pave the way for Linux. I installed Linux Mint Debian Edition with the Cinnamon Desktop. This desktop is considered light heavy weight. The installation was easy and the distro ran with a few issues that are so minor that they can be considered fine tuning. The computer was very responsive and worked well. I have tried lighter weight distros such as Crunchbang 11 Waldorf 32 bit, Porteus 2.1 64Bit, (from a persistent USB stick) and Peppermint OS Four 32bit. Peppermint OS Four works really very well. This installation was very simple and fast. Peppermint OS Four uses the very light weight LXDE desktop. This distro works out of the box with this computer It turns the Fujitsu-Siemens into a speed machine. It is as if it was made for this computer. The only area it is weak in is as a games plateform. The intergrated intel graphic card is limiting to what games can be played. This is not uncommon with laptops though. Peppermint OS Five is due to be dropped in May/June 2014. The developers have said there is going to only be minor changes. I expect Peppermint OS Five will run in a very similar way on the Fujitsu Siemens. I can highly recommend the Fujitsu Siemens AMILO Li3710 for use with Linux.
